The original 2006 Geographic Information Science & Technology Body of Knowledge had 329 Topics, organised into 73 Units and 10 Knowledge Areas and over 1600 Learning Objectives. Knowledge Areas are presented alphabetically in the First Edition as feedback from the preliminary “Strawman Report” for the BoK showed that people thought that the order of the KAs was meaningful if they were presented in any order other than alphabetically.

All Knowledge Areas are equally important.

The GIS&T BoK documents the domain of geographic information science and its associated technologies. UCGIS launched a digital version in 2016 that is built entirely and directly from the first with new and revised content – as Topics – continually added over time.
