ArcGIS Online is a cloud-based Mapping Solution – your data and maps are stored on servers (where these servers are located depends on the type of implementation your organisation has) and made available to you via a technology-stack (software and computers) that are basically invisible to you as a user. There can be implications on ethics and grant applications as a result of this opacity – some research has strict guidelines on where data can be housed. This is something SAL can work through with you if your work may be impacted.
